Doing Good with Google

To kick off this week, we’re going to start with a great day of getting acquainted with our city and helping out some pretty amazing organizations. Google has organized a day of service dedicated to two groups—the St. Bernard Project and SEE (Sustainable Environmental Enterprises.) So get out there, get your hands dirty, and get ready to do a little bit to help New Orleans.

The St. Bernard Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding the homes in St. Bernard Parish - a parish which saw nearly 100% of its homes destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. The St. Bernard Project has successfully rebuilt or built anew 252 homes, with 50 more on the way. The Project's co-founder, Liz McCartney, was named CNN's Hero of the Year in 2008.

Come celebrate the grand opening of SEE! The corporation that has already had a landmark impact on New Orleans' Central City neighborhood. After working with Berekeley's Haas IDEAcorps last year, they are excited to show their progress.

Sustainable Environmental Enterprises is a for-profit, mission-driven corporation dedicated to opening access to renewable energy sources to low and moderate income households. By providing financing, customer education, installation, and ongoing maintenance, SEE makes solar power affordable by allowing its buyers to circumvent the typically high upfront costs of renewable energy and by making financing possible even for people with lower credit scores.

New Orleans is at a tipping point; the city is in unchartered waters, as we embark on an historical time. An entrepreneurial community has taken root and now is time to determine how we can launch our city, our community to the next level. For 60 years, the Aspen Institute has been helping business leaders from around the globe to engage with their peers in discussion about their leadership, about their view of a "good society", and about their personal legacy. This exclusive seminar will engage New Orleans leaders in that same discussion, helping them get up-to-speed and ready to connect with CEOs from around the world.

The Coulter Challenge

Penny and Jim Coulter

The Coulter Challenge is the mammoth, action-packed culmination to New Orleans Entrepreneur Week. Held at the National World War II Museum, the event will bring together all the participants in New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, city leaders, and innovation enthusiasts from around the city. After an Idea Pitch Entrepreneurial Panel, we'll have presentations from both entrepreneurs and students on what they learned, who they met, and what inspired them over the course of the week. Sponsored by Jim Coulter, the event will conclude with a celebration at the home of James Carville and Mary Matalin.

Jim Coulter is a Founding Partner of TPG Capital, Inc. TPG, Capital, Inc. (also known as the Texas Pacific Group) is a leading global private equity firm with 15 offices around the world and assets under management in excess of $50 billion. TPG is a lead investor in a portfolio over 70 diverse companies including Neiman Marcus, Burger King, Petco, Avaya, Harrahs, Mey Icki (the largest spirits company in Turkey) and China Grand Auto (the largest auto dealership network in China). Jim has served on numerous corporate and charitable Boards including the Stanford Board of Trustees, Lenovo Group International, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, IMS Health, J Crew Group, Inc., Neiman Marcus Group and Common Sense Media. Jim is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Penny Coulter is a native of New Orleans and is active in civic and philanthropic pursuits. Penny has served on the Boards of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, The California Academy of Sciences and was a founding National Board Member for Summer Search, a non-profit focused on underprivileged youth. She is active in educational pursuits as a past member of the University of Virginia Foundation Board and as a former Board Member of the Little School in San Francisco. Currently, Penny serves on the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholar Selection Committee. Penny is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

Penny and Jim and their three children are residents of San Francisco but are long time supporters of New Orleans and The Idea Village. In the after-math of Katrina they founded the Crescent City Relief Fund, which has been an active contributor to New Orleans causes from the arts to education. Through the Stanford GSB they sponsored the initial group of Stanford GSB students who came to New Orleans to support The Idea Village. They have funded The Coulter Challenge in support of the development of New Orleans as a center of entrepreneurism.

James is a political consultant, commentator, and liberal pundit. In addition to his role as the lead strategist for Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign, James has served as a co-host on CNN's Crossfire and has appeared on CNN's The Situation Room. Mary is a political consultant and also serves as chief editor of Threshold Editions. In 2008, James and Mary relocated to New Orleans, where James now serves as a professor of political science at Tulane University.
